Interview questions that actually test accounting capability

August 2026 · 4 min read

Ask about decisions, not duties

Anyone can describe what a management accountant does. Far fewer can walk you through a judgement call they made — a variance they investigated, a forecast they defended, a process they fixed. Ask candidates to take you through one real example in detail, and listen for the reasoning, not just the outcome.

Questions worth asking

  • Tell me about a month-end that went wrong. What did you do, and what changed afterwards?
  • Walk me through how you would explain a budget variance to a non-finance manager.
  • Describe a time you pushed back on a number someone senior wanted to use.
  • What is a process you inherited that you improved? How did you know it worked?

Test the systems, not just the stories

If the role lives in a particular ERP or reporting tool, say so and ask directly what the candidate has built or run in it. A short practical exercise — reviewing a mock report, talking through a reconciliation — tells you more in twenty minutes than an hour of behavioural questions.

When we shortlist accounting candidates at Stonefish Careers, this is the level of detail we probe before a CV reaches your desk.
